(2011) Welcome to Shirley

Welcome to Shirley is a film that falls somewhere in the stasis between being a comedic drama and dramatic comedy. It addresses and satirizes the quirkiness of the family unit, as well as the small-town environment, but on a deeper level it confronts complex ideas of bereavement, familial rivalry, and how hard it can be to stay together as things are falling apart. The film follows two brothers separated by distance, time, and attitude as they struggle to cope with their father's recent death and prepare for his funeral the day before he is laid to rest. Along the way, we encounter all the members of the Banerhamm family, and discover that perhaps our own families are not quite as dysfunctional as we think.

Welcome To Shirley will show again at the USC Hillel on Saturday Jaunary 21st at 7PM, you can get your tickets here.
